New local Guide for growing trees

Canberrans can now find it easier to grow their green spaces and gardens as the Suburban Land Agency (SLA) has released a guide on choosing the right tree for right gardens.

Launching its Plant a Tree in Your Canberra Garden, the Agency said the Guide provided practical information for choosing the right tree based on house design and local conditions.

“Depending on your house design and location conditions, selecting the right tree to plant in your garden can create shade and privacy, and provide a habitat for birds and bees,” the SLA said.

“It is important to choose the right tree for your garden, and to think carefully about where you plant it based on your house design and local conditions,” it said.

“Trees will likely be the largest – and hopefully longest-lived – plants in your garden, so it’s important that we plan for trees that co-exist with your house foundations, driveway, pipes, solar panels, and access to sunlight.”

The SLA said that when selected carefully and placed in the right spot, trees could create shade and privacy, provide habitat for birds and bees, block winds and grow fruit that the households could harvest for years to come.

“The trees recommended in the Guide are suggestions based on Canberra’s unique climate and soil conditions, including their frost tolerance,” the Agency said.

It said the Guide’s list was only a small sample of the types of trees that were suitable for Canberra’s growing conditions and encouraged people to visit their local nursery for more information.

The SLA said the Guide also contained useful resources for further reading about choosing the right trees.
