ACT Fire and Rescue is taking possession of two new state-of-the-art firefighting machines to improve its ability to fight fires and keep Canberrans safe as the city grows.
Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Mick Gentleman said one of the machines, an urban pumper, was equipped with a 25-metre ladder and rescue platform.
“It’s a faster vehicle capable of tight access rescues and firefighting,” Mr Gentleman said.
“This pumper will be a great addition to the fleet as higher density housing is built in the ACT,” he said.
“We will also deliver a new 44-metre aerial platform to replace the Bronto, providing our firefighters with a more reliable appliance to fight fires in our town centres and suburbs.
He said the platform was designed for raised observations and included a water tower for high rise fires and rescues. It could also access areas below ground level.
“Both new vehicles will be equipped with advanced technology including thermal cameras and wheelchair accessible ramps,” the Minister said.
“The ACT Emergency Services Agency has signed contracts with the leader in aerial innovation, Rosenbauer Queensland/Germany to deliver the vehicles. Supplying them through one contractor will enable firefighters to operate both vehicles with the same training.”
He said ACT firefighters were some of the most highly skilled in the country and the Government was committed to ensuring they were well equipped.
