A new fire and ambulance station is to be built in Acton to service central Canberra as part of the Territory’s COVID-19 jobs and economic recovery plan.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Mick Gentleman said the Government had allocated over $45 million to the new station to ensure emergency services continued to deliver nation-leading response times.

“The new City Station is being designed and constructed to provide flexibility in the number of crews and appliances that the station can accommodate on a 24/7 basis to maintain service delivery and support to the community,” Mr Gentleman said.

“The new station will support two Ambulance Services and ACT Fire & Rescue (ACTF&R) crews and two appliances at all times, with the added ability to house an extra appliance or support vehicle if required,” he said.

Mr Gentleman said the construction of the station would create and support local jobs at a time when the city needed them most.

“It will provide accommodation for the new fire fighters and paramedics we are recruiting and help ensure they have the resources and support they need to manage the growing demands on their services,” he said.

“Given its location, the new station is predicted to be the busiest station for both ACT Ambulance Services (ACTAS) and ACTF&R.”

Mr Gentleman said the station would also assist the Emergency Services Agency (ESA) to maintain and improve emergency response times.

He said the new station would service Canberra City and the Inner North and was expected to be operational in the 2022-2023 financial year.
