New DESBT program steers an apprenticeship path

The Department of Employment, Small Business and Training has developed a Pre-Apprenticeship Support program to help Queenslanders secure the training they need for the job they want.

The new employment-based pathway is to help more than 300 people in the State, while the extension of existing programs will support hundreds more.

Minister for Training and Skills Development, Di Farmer said the pathway would be delivered by Group Training Organisations (GTOs) and would not only help people get onto apprenticeships, but to complete them as well.

“Businesses right across Queensland are crying out for workers, which is why investing in skills is a key priority of the Government,” Ms Farmer said.

“For this new pre-apprenticeship pathway we are working with seven GTOs who will recruit and train 301 people aged between 15 and 24 to complete a Certificate Level I qualification in construction, engineering or hospitality,” she said.

The Minister said those who completed the Program would be helped to transition to a subsequent apprenticeship, either employed by the GTO or with another employer.

“This pathway allows people to explore the different options open to them before embarking on an apprenticeship, meaning when they do take that step, they’re much more likely to successfully complete it,” Ms Farmer said.

The Pre-Apprenticeship Support Program is funded through the $200 million Future Skills Fund.
