New deadline for road traffic rules

The Department of Transport and Main Roads has extended the deadline for the mandatory adoption of the Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management (AGTTM).

The new deadline will now be 1 December.

The guide, which was released nationally in December 2019, provides consistent national guidance for the planning, design and implementation of safe, economical and efficient temporary traffic management.

Director-General of Transport and Main Roads, Neil Scales said the guide’s adoption would maximise safety for road workers and motorists at temporary traffic management sites.

“We have been working with temporary traffic management organisations across the State for almost 18 months to prepare them for the mandatory adoption of the guide,” Mr Scales said.

“We have had regular contact with key stakeholder groups to offer guidance and encourage early adoption of the best practices that will keep their people safe when working on the roadside,” he said.

Mr Scales said the organisations had been able to voluntarily adopt the new temporary traffic management standards since 1 January.

He said the date for mandatory adoption had been extended from 1 August to 1 December to support companies focused on the Queensland Government’s Unite and Recover program of work.

“We know the temporary traffic management industry has been working hard to support the Unite and Recover program of work in Queensland while transitioning to the new standards, and the extension will allow four more months to prepare,” Mr Scales said.

“AGTTM adoption is an important step towards improving safety for some of our most vulnerable workers and ensures a consistent approach to temporary traffic management Australia-wide.”

The AGTTM provides guidance on traffic control devices including signs, traffic signals, pavement markings and traffic islands used at temporary road-work sites.

It seeks to provide consistency and safety at sites for workers, as well as pedestrians, bike riders and motorcycle riders.
