New cyber guidance for PS gateways

The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) has launched a new guidance package to help public sector organisations, including those in South Australia, make informed, risk-based decisions when designing or consuming gateway services.

Releasing its Gateway Security Guidance package, the Centre said gateways played an important role for organisations’ cyber-security, providing protection at the perimeter between the internet and their networks.

“Gateways are effective in a layered cyber security defence, able to be shared between organisations and broadening cyber-security benefits among users,” the ACSC said.

“The guidance will assist organisations to make informed risk-based decisions when designing or consuming gateway services.” it said.

“It reflects Government and industry best practices for the procurement, operation and disposal of gateway systems.”

The ACSC said the package included executive guidance, gateway security principles, gateway operations and management, and gateway technology guides.

“As gateway security functions are becoming readily available in cloud service offerings, gateway architectures are evolving,” it said.

“Hybrid and cloud-native gateways, combined with new ways of working, means that gateway architectures will look different in the future.”

The Cyber Centre said the guidance package outlined how organisations should approach cyber-security challenges to make their gateways more secure, flexible and adaptive to different architectures and delivery models.”

It said the new guidance could be used by all organisations designing, procuring, operating, maintaining or disposing of a gateway, even though it was principally developed for Australian Government gateway consumers.
