A new code of practice for building surveyors, aimed at increasing industry accountability, has been announced by the Minister for Building Quality Improvement, Gordon Ramsay.
Mr Ramsay said the new code would be supported by a mandatory online course for people applying to be building surveyors.
He said the new code of practice would be compulsory from 1 September and the online course would be finalised and available in the coming weeks.
“Building surveyors play a key role in the construction sector, including the safety, energy efficiency, liveability of our new homes and extensions to existing properties,” Mr Ramsay said.
“The new code of practice will help industry and consumers understand what to expect when they engage a building surveyor.”
He said there was a need to ensure the industry was guided by clear expectations and that people in the appropriate roles understood various building-related rules and had the necessary skills to advise both the construction industry and consumers.
The Minister said the code had been designed to help ensure actions were taken in the public interest and covered requirements such as record keeping, compliant handling and inspections at specific stages of building work.
“The new requirements are being introduced as part of the Government’s commitment to improving building quality and the construction sector in the Territory,” Mr Ramsay said.
He said he would continue to introduce reforms designed to raise the standards of the local industry.
