The Department of Transport and Main Roads has announced that the first of 24 new electric vehicle chargers in Western Queensland is now under construction.

The Department said its contractor, Yurika was onsite in Kingaroy to build and commission the first charger of the current rollout.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Mark Bailey said there were more than 10,000 registered electric vehicles (EVs) on Queensland roads.

“We’re supporting this uptake through $3,000 new EV rebates and more charging infrastructure,” Mr Bailey said.

“Queensland’s Electric Super Highway is currently positioned in 31 locations and is now expanding to a further 24 across the interior of the State to make travelling with an EV even easier.”

He said Kingaroy was the first stop, soon to be followed by Longreach, Barcaldine, Blackall, Charleville, Miles and Stanthorpe.

Assistant Minister for Regional Roads, Bruce Saunders said the rollout would mean the Super Highway would soon be 5,400 kilometres long.

“This system will be the single largest electric super highway in one jurisdiction anywhere in the world,” Mr Saunders said.

“The Government is committed to making electric vehicles as accessible as possible to all Queenslanders, and our new charging network is just one way we can achieve that.”
