The Justice and Community Safety Directorate is set to install four new Public Safety Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in Canberra’s Henry Rolland Park.
In a statement, the Directorate said the $100,000 investment was an expansion of the ACT network of CCTV cameras to help keep the community safe.
“These state-of-the-art cameras provide high definition 360-degree coverage of the park to strengthen public safety and asset protection at this wonderful location,” the Directorate said.
“We are committed to creating safer public spaces, venues and events for all Canberrans to enjoy.”
It said the announcement of the latest installation of cameras was part of a strategic safety plan to upgrade the city’s CCTV network and expand it into public areas and bus interchanges.
“The cameras are connected to the ACT’s Public Safety CCTV Network that supports ACT Policing to investigate crime and identify and prosecute offenders,” the Directorate said.
It said in 2018-19, ACT Policing used footage from the CCTV Network on 277 occasions to investigate crime and support court proceedings.
“ACT Policing has so far been dispatched on 79 occasions to incidents captured by live monitoring,” the Directorate said.
It said privacy protection was a major consideration of the plan and that the network operated in accordance with the ACT’s human rights, privacy and records laws.
