Visitors to the Big Desert State Forest in the Mallee will soon be able to enjoy a night under the stars, as construction of the new Stockman’s Campground begins.
Announced by Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) the new campground is part of Victoria’s Great Outdoors program, a $105.6 million allocation by the State into forests, parks, campgrounds, caravan parks, tracks and outdoor facilities.
Senior Forest Management and Roading Officer at FFMVic, Scott McLean said the new Campground was 35 kilometres south of the Big Billy Bore Campground, and would have something for everyone, with networks of four-wheel drive tracks, walking trails, and great facilities.
“Following the easing of restrictions we have seen again how much people value exploring the great outdoors and experiencing the health benefits of spending time in nature,” Mr McLean said.
“We’ve just completed the first stage of work on the new campground, sinking a bore and installing a pump, so there is non-drinking water available for washing and firefighting,” he said.
“We’ll construct campsites, a toilet block, picnic shelter, tables, barbeques and ash bins.”
Mr McLean said the works were being undertaken by Forest Fire Management Victoria and would be completed in stages over the next three years.
