The ACT Parks and Conservation Service has put out a call for volunteer firefighters to help protect the ACT in the next fire season.
Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Mick Gentleman said the annual recruitment drive was a good opportunity for people who wanted to contribute to the safety of the region and enjoyed working outside.
“Seasonal firefighters play a crucial role in keeping Canberra safe while also protecting our water supplies,” Mr Gentleman said.
“We are looking for people who work well in a team and are keen to learn new skills,” he said.
“The successful applicants will be given full training in bushfire fighting, chainsaw operations, driving four-wheel drives, advanced first aid, and other on-the-job duties.”
He said there were 15 places available in the seasonal fire team, including three seasonal crew leaders.
“We are committed to incorporating Traditional Custodian fire management practices into our operations and are strongly encouraging Ngunnawal peoples and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples to apply for these roles,” Mr Gentleman said.
Executive Group Manager for Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development at Parks and Conservation, Ian Walker said seasonal firefighters played a crucial role in the Territory’s preparedness for each bushfire season and could be quickly activated to help fight any fires.
“Seasonal firefighters gain valuable skills and experience providing a great career pathway into the Parks and Conservation Service with many securing full-time employment,” Mr Walker said.
