A new Australian Public Service Academy is to be established in Canberra to improve the learning skills of the Australian Public Service (APS) and help develop stronger capabilities among its members.

Announced by the Assistant Minister to the Minister for the Public Service, Ben Morton, the Academy is to be aimed at “transforming APS learning and development practice and promoting excellence in capability development”.

“The APS Academy will transform the APS learning and development practice and promote excellence in capability development,” Mr Morton said.

“It will deliver a more integrated and a single APS approach to learning and development, with a focus on leadership, integrity and core APS craft capabilities.”

He said the Academy would connect to existing APS centres of excellence, as well as developing external networks with academic institutions and specialist providers.

“The focus on the APS Academy will be to deliver specific Public Service learning programs from mid-2021,” the Assistant Minister said.

He said that although the Academy would not be a “bricks and mortar” institution, it would be headquartered as a tenant in Old Parliament House.

Mr Morton said locating the Academy in the Old Parliament House would reinforce the critical role the APS has played, and continues to play, in Australia’s democracy.

He said the rich history of Old Parliament House in the 120-years of the Federal Government and Public Service made it an excellent location to build the capability of today’s Public Servants and inspire future leaders.

“We live in a country with a strong democracy that should fill every Australian with pride,” Mr Morton said.

He said further details on the APS Academy, and other key projects under way, would be announced at a’ State of the Service’ event to be held in Canberra on 19 February.
