Murray River Park management up for comment

The Department for Environment and Water (DEW) has called on the locals of Riverland as well as nature lovers the State over to have their say on a proposed new management plan for the Murray River National Park.

The Department said the draft plan would be on show for the next three months to allow public consultation via the YourSAy portal.

According to DEW, the Murray River National Park is a series of protected areas along the river floodplain from Kingston-on-Murray to Bulyong Island, north of Renmark.

It includes the popular Katarapko, Lyrup Flats and Paringa Paddock areas.

The planned changes are to replace the existing park management plan with a more modern one incorporating additions to the Park and updating management priorities.

It said the new management plan would only affect lands currently within the Murray River National Park and did not consider game reserves such as Loch Luna, Moorook and Chowilla Game Reserves.

It said the Park conserved about 15,000 hectares of wetlands and floodplains that provide unique natural experiences, protecting natural and cultural heritage values.

“It also provides access for camping, fishing, nature study and water sports, particularly during long weekends and school holidays,” the Department said.

“Importantly, the new park management plan will incorporate the many parcels of land which have been added to the park since the last park management plan was adopted in 1994” it said.

It said that once complete, the new plan would replace the Murray River National Park Management Plan 1994 and the Murray River National Park Management Plan Amendment 2010.

“A new park management plan is proposed to refresh the management approach, and more clearly detail the planned management of the Park,” the Department said.

“We want to hear your views on the draft management plan.”
