More parks to play for kids and dogs

The ACT’s City Services is calling for feedback on proposed dog parks and playgrounds as work begins for their rollout next year.

Encouraging the citizens of Canberra to have their say, the Minister for Transport and City Services, Chris Steel said two new dog parks were proposed for Franklin and the Lanyon Valley, “to make sure more Canberrans in the north and south of Canberra have more places to play with their best friend”.

“With one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the country we know Canberrans want to have more places they can bring their dog and spend time with other dog owners,” Mr Steel said

“Upgraded playgrounds at Kaleen and Lyons will also make sure that families have access to high quality playgrounds in their suburb that support children’s health and wellbeing,” he said.

“We expect work to kick off on these upgrades next year following feedback on the specific elements that Canberrans living in these areas would like to see.”

Mr Steel said that proposed upgrades to the Kaleen and Lyons playgrounds included fencing, shade sails, picnic shelters and bike racks.

He said the Lanyon dog park, on the corner of Jim Pike Avenue and Woodcock Drive in Gordon, was set to include dog agility and grassed areas, a picnic shelter, drinking fountains and seating.

The Minister said the dog park on Nullarbor Avenue and Oodgeroo Avenue in Franklin could include a gravelled area for a coffee van, a picnic shelter and seating and a dog agility area with natural elements.
