The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) says there will be 44 extra hours of trading for general retail shops in Perth for the Christmas and New Year period.
In a statement, the Department said delivery delays due to the impact of COVID-19 restrictions could increase the risk of Christmas gifts not arriving on time.
“So it is recommended shoppers look at either going into local bricks-and-mortar shops or, if ordering gifts online, give preference to WA traders,” it said.
“The extended trading hours for general retail shops in the Perth metropolitan area will begin on 5 December.
“Sunday and public holiday trading has been extended an extra four hours a day, with an additional one hour on Saturdays.”
The DMIRS said that, from 13 December to Christmas Eve inclusive, larger shops could choose to open one hour earlier from 7am until 9pm on weekdays.
“Trading for the Australia Day public holiday on 26 January will also be extended by four hours,” it said.
Minister for Commerce, Amber-Jade Sanderson said the best way for people to ensure their Christmas gifts arrived on time this year was by shopping locally “so I would encourage consumers to support WA businesses”.
“The extended retail trading hours will expand consumer convenience and provide more opportunity for bricks-and-mortar stores to enjoy a financially rewarding Christmas shopping period,” Ms Sanderson said.
