A pilot of upgraded communication equipment on Metro Trains is set to help passengers get clearer and simpler journey information, with 29 upgraded trains to be rolled out over the next 12 months
The Minister for Public Transport, Melissa Horne said a Comeng test train fitted with upgraded communications equipment was now taking passengers on the Metro network as part of the pilot.
“The upgrades include a range of features like real-time high definition information, coloured passenger information displays with dynamic route maps and clearer destination screens on the outside of trains,” Ms Horne said.
“High definition CCTV cameras with better clarity and a wider field of view to keep passengers safe and to support Metro and Victoria Police investigations will also be installed,” she said.
Ms Horne said improvements would be made to hearing aid links and upgraded speakers for clearer on-board announcements.
She said stage three would include upgrades to the air compression system that powered the brakes, doors, pantographs and traction systems.
Ms Horne said Metro was also retrofitting thousands of wireless data recorders to the X’Trapolis and Siemens fleets so engineers could monitor the condition of key train systems in real-time and prevent faults before they occurred.
