Mental health issues in the spotlight

The Department of Health says Mental Health Week 2021 (9-16 October) will engage children, parents, carers, family members and people who work with children.

The Department said this year’s theme was Mental Health Starts with our Children.

Minister for Mental Health, Stephen Dawson said the week would include community events and activities, as well as the development of resources and fact sheets for individuals and organisations.

“The aim of Mental Health Week is to raise awareness of mental health issues, improve mental health literacy, reduce stigma and discrimination and contribute to the improved mental health and wellbeing of Western Australians,” Mr Dawson said.

“The 2021 theme recognises how critical experiences are in the early and formative years for lifelong brain development and functioning, learning, resilience and wellbeing.”

The Minister said there was much that we as a community could learn about looking after our mental health and wellbeing.

“Getting involved with your kids’ wellbeing, listening and supporting them, and taking care of their basic needs are so important to help prevent lifelong mental health issues,” he said.

Mental Health Week is also a great opportunity to familiarise ourselves with the support services available for young people and families,” Mr Dawson said.
