Lyneham High School has won an award in the Education Category at the recent ACT Violence Prevention Awards.

The school’s winning program, DARE, provides leadership challenges for boys.

The annual awards recognise projects, organisations and individuals who make a significant contribution towards the prevention of violence against women and children in Canberra.

The DARE program (Developing Adolescent Resilience and Enterprise) was acknowledged for its ability to change attitudes and behaviour to support an anti-violence culture.

In a statement, Lyneham High School said DARE was devised for Year 9 and 10 boys to harness the strengths of teamwork and leadership through fitness, sport and positive role modelling.

“Students are involved in extensive fitness work as both individuals and as a part of a team,” the statement said.

“The boys are provided with opportunities to show leadership within the group as well as within a greater school community and are held to a high standard of behaviour across the program.”

It said the program was run through a health and physical education class.

“It is one of the many diverse programs offered at Lyneham High School,” the statement said.
