Consumer Protection has updated its brochure offering advice to seniors on ‘multi-generational living’.
In a statement, the Agency said multi-generational living occurred when people from two or more generations of a family lived together in the same household or on the same property.
“Perhaps you are considering entering into a multi-generational living arrangement,” the statement said.
“This could be because you wanted to downsize from a large family home to a smaller, more manageable space, or to help your adult children enter into home ownership.
“You may wish to secure a home following a late-life divorce or to ease other financial difficulties, or to help your adult children and their families through a financial challenge like a divorce or a job loss.”
The Agency said that other circumstances could involve helping your family with childcare, or home upkeep; establishing a secure and safe living arrangement for the future — “or perhaps you would just like to live closer to family”.
“If you’re considering living with a multi-generational family, this guide provides information to help you consider different living arrangements; take account of personal circumstances; have open discussions with family, or think about legal and financial issues,” the statement said.
“Above all, you should decide what’s best for you.”
