Light rail, night rail for signal tests

Transport Canberra has urged motorists on Northbourne Avenue to plan ahead this week.

It said the new signalling system for light rail was being tested at night with closures of several intersections in place.

It said the tests were being carried out overnight to minimise disruption and so they could be conducted in the safest way possible.

“Canberra Metro is closing intersections on Flemington Road, Federal Highway and Northbourne Avenue between 8pm and 6am,” Transport Canberra said.

“Diversions for motorists will be in place and clearly signposted along the corridor.”

It said the following intersections were closed during night hours to all southbound and northbound right-turning traffic, and to traffic crossing through: Lysaght Street, Mitchell Resource Centre, Randwick Road, EPIC, Phillip Avenue, Swinden, Morphett and Murdoch Street, Macarthur-Wakefield Avenues, Masson-Girrahween Street and Elouera-Gould Street.

It said there were a number of temporary closures at the remaining intersections between Mitchell and the City to give light rail vehicles priority to travel through with the intersections reopened when they pass.

“Light rail vehicles will always have priority at traffic lights, meaning the order of traffic light sequencing will vary for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists,” the Agency said.

It stressed it was important for everyone in the community to be aware, stay safe and obey the road rules around the light rail corridor as the environment had changed.
