Library to add festival fun to collection

With Adelaide Fringe and the Adelaide Festival on until Sunday (20 March), the State Library of South Australia (SLSA) is calling on members of the public, including artists and event organisers, to collect and donate programs and ephemera to its collection.

In a statement, the SLSA said it had been collecting Fringe and Festival programs and ephemera since the 1960s, particularly items such as event programs, promotional flyers and leaflets, tickets and posters, which had largely been collected through donations.

The State Library said that while it welcomed material from Adelaide’s city suburbs, it would particularly like Fringe or Festival ephemera donations from locations outside the city area.

“At present, the Library’s collection has a focus on Adelaide city venues and to get a better representation of our community, we would like to have more material from events held in outer-metropolitan and country venues,” the Library said.

“The Adelaide Fringe and Adelaide Festival are the biggest events in our State’s calendar and attract artists and audiences from around the world.

“Festival and event ephemera tell the story of our arts and entertainment scene and reflect changing social, political and personal issues.”

The SLSA said some of the locations that had venues in this year’s Fringe and Festival events included: Aldgate; Port Adelaide; Clarendon; Port Noarlunga; Cleve; Salisbury; Mount Gambier; Stirling; Murray Bridge; Strathalbyn; and Naracoorte.

It said people could drop material in to the State Library, or send it to Festival Ephemera, Published Collections, State Library of South Australia, GPO Box 419, Adelaide SA 5001.

“Thank you for helping to build the collections of your State Library and capturing the stories that make us,” the SLSA said.
