The State Library of Western Australia is hosting the World Press Photo Exhibition, showcasing the best visual journalism of the past year.

The State Library said that, since 1955, the World Press Photo Contest had recognised professional photographers for the best pictures presented as individual photos or stories in eight categories.

It said in an unprecedented year marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and social justice protests around the globe, the winners shared a diversity of interpretations and perspectives to these and other urgent issues such as the climate crisis, transgender people’s rights and territorial conflicts.

The State Library said this year, the Contest saw 4,315 photographers from 130 countries enter 74,470 images.

It said an independent jury made up of 28 photography professionals selected the best pictures and stories of the year and the exhibition featured the works of 45 photographers from 28 countries.

The State Library said the Contest jury selected Mads Nissen’s photographThe First Embrace (pictured) as the World Press Photo of the Year, and Habibi, by Antonio Faccilongo as the World Press Photo Story of the Year.

Minister for Culture and the Arts, David Templeman said bringing the exhibition to Perth had been a coup for the State Library.

“I urge anyone with an interest in photography or current affairs to come along and see this wonderful free exhibition,” Mr Templeman said.

The exhibition runs until 20 August and further information can be accessed at this PS News link.
