The Department of Justice has launched a recruitment campaign to attract new officers for its Youth Justice Services.

In a statement, the Department said the campaign featured five cinemagraphs (still images enhanced with movement and sound) along with three videos.

It said they recorded Youth Justice Officers (YJOs) meeting with young people in locations including Kununurra, Roebourne and Perth.

“Whether it is at court, on Country, or in the community, they show the involvement of YJOs, getting to know and understand the young person they are helping and playing a vital role in not only the justice system, but the wider community,” it said.

The Department said Senior YJO, Tony and YJOs, Brooke (pictured) and Danielle also shared their stories and experiences about the job that they love.

“While Tony has been in youth justice for around 50 years, Danielle has just embarked on her journey as a YJO,” it said.

“Each YJO has a special place in guiding youth through the justice system by helping them comply with their court orders, writing reports for them and mentoring them to make better life choices.”

Tony said it was a privilege to be involved in young people’s lives.

“Every day is different, because every young person’s story is different,” he said.

“If you can get the young people onside, build rapport and get the support of their environment and family, you can get the outcome that the young person deserves.”

Danielle said YJOs helped young people to find ways to try to make their lives easier; helped them to better themselves which reduced crime “so it is better for everybody”.

“Every young person should have someone to rely on,” she said.

Applications for YJOs close on 22 November and people interested in applying should access this PS News link.
