“Snow was falling,
so much like stars
filling the dark trees
that one could easily imagine
its reason for being was nothing more
than prettiness.” — Mary Oliver
It seems like everything sleeps in winter, but it’s really a time of renewal and reflection. This picture is perfect: snowflakes swirl down gently in the deep blue haze beyond the window. The outside world is a dream, but no winter lasts forever.
As H.S. Jacobs said winter is nature’s sleep – and it is for a short time. It can be a changeable season, so turn it to your advantage even though the temperatures are plunging … because the backdrop is picturesque in the Snowy Mountains!
It is not the time for a traditional white Christmas, but the opportunity is ripe to utilise some idyllic winter pursuits like skiing, snowboarding, building a snowman, having a snowball fight or just curling up by a roaring fire to read a book.
However, due to COVID-safe regulations, there may be changes to ski resort operations and on-mountain capacities.
Award-winning services
We take our holiday breaks to unwind, revive and be pampered at the Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa, but the accommodation options on offer are numerous.
Home to Australia’s highest peak, the Snowy Mountains in winter deliver holidays to remember at Thredbo, Perisher and Charlotte Pass, to name some alternatives. The adventure wonderland is brimming with fun experiences, from thrilling downhill runs on pristine snow to music festivals, wine tasting, fascinating heritage and much more.
Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa is your launch pad to epic snow fun with Thredbo and Perisher Resorts just 15 minutes away.
You have all the ingredients for the perfect snow holiday if you add the convenient onsite ‘snow’ stores and the Lake Crackenback Spa and Wellness Centre to iron out the aches and pains, and après ski amenities. Among the astonishing facilities are the region’s highest acclaimed restaurant and day spa. It has been named as one of Australia’s top hotel spas.
The myriad of activities on offer is unbelievable. Relax by the lake and absorb the scenery or experience the huge selection of activities available at the resort and the surrounding region.
It has proved to be the perfect base for our trips in both winter and summer. Explore all facets of the Snowy Mountains in the cold with snow sports to the many summer activities available including river sledding tours, walking to Australia’s highest peak — Mt Kosciuszko — and trout fishing. Free activities include golf, trampolines, canoeing, tennis, archery and travelling along 25km of mountain bike and walking trails.
The resort rooms range from overwater lake-view apartments to mountain-view chalets. Thredbo is 15 minutes along the Alpine Way from the resort and requires entering the park. Perisher is accessed via the ski tube that is 800 metres from the resort.
Located on the border of the Kosciuszko National Park, the resort is a natural playground nestled in the Thredbo Valley surrounded by the spectacular Snowy Mountain ranges.
Endeavour to stay out of harm’s way, follow COVID-safe practices and listen to local alerts in the Snowy Mountains region.
Prime location
The region is closer to Canberra, but if you come from Sydney, the epic road trip will take you through the mist-draped villages of the Southern Highlands, skirting Lake George and passing the nation’s capital before arriving in Cooma, the largest town in the Snowy Mountains. This is the start of the renowned Kosciuszko Alpine Way, a 170km route carved through the range toward Khancoban, with Australia’s loftiest peak, Mount Kosciuszko, as your backdrop.
Our holiday highlights have included:
- Ski, snowboard, snowshoe and toboggan at a winter resort
- Savour paddock-to-plate freshness at Crackenback Farm, just outside of Jindabyne
- Spending some time at the Wildbrumby Distillery, with its award-winning stable of schnapps, gin and vodka.
- Staying on a working farm, replete with friendly animal residents
- Soaking in warm thermal waters at Yarrangobilly Caves, Kosciuszko National Park
We were ideally located at the resort, between the two ski fields, so had the best of both worlds. Ski Perisher one day … and Thredbo the next!
Every once in a while you have to get away from urban pressures, slow down and indulge in surrounds that create pictographic memories … in your very own winter wonderland.
Do what Elsa said in Frozen — and don’t let the cold bother you in any way!
