Indigenous grants right on the money

The latest round of grants to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Canberra strengthen their cultural heritage, participate in lifelong learning and become community leaders has been announced.

Four projects will receive a total of $11,000 in the latest round to support individuals and community organisations run programs and events that promote a wider understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and languages in the ACT.

Announcing the recipients of the grants the Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, Rachel Stephen-Smith said they included a group of local organisations to hold a NAIDOC Week community event in the Woden Town Centre.

Stephen-Smith said funding had also been granted for the development of a resource kit to create stronger partnerships between ACT schools and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

“Alongside the cultural grants, the ACT Government runs a Leadership and Scholarship grant program throughout the year,” Ms Stephen-Smith said.

“This program encourages Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and organisations to undertake training and study that further develops their skills and qualifications.”

She said six individuals would receive a total of $13,199 in the latest round of Leadership and Scholarship grants.

“One person will receive funding for ICT equipment to finalise a Certificate III in Fitness. Others receive grants to go towards studying a diploma and Certificate III and IV courses,” the Minister said.

She said applications were now open for the next round of Cultural, Leadership and Scholarship grants.

All members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in Canberra who have an idea, initiative or desire to further their education are encouraged to apply, she said.
