The Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources (DISER) has unveiled a new staffing inclusion strategy to carry it through to the end of 2023.

Secretary of DISER, David Fredericks said creating a workplace where all employees felt engaged, included and part of the overall culture was “critical”.

“Inclusion is important right now to help people realise a sense of teamwork, belonging and safety, particularly as we adapt to new ways of working during challenging times,” Mr Fredericks said.

“We also want to ensure all our employees feel confident to bring their unique skills, backgrounds, perspectives to work, and have what they need to perform at their own best.”

He said the inclusion strategy had five focus areas: Collaboration, innovation, respect, excellence and flexibility — “these align with our values and future ways of working”.

“Our strategy details our inclusion commitments to support staff over the next three years,” Mr Fredericks said.

“This includes improving recruitment, career advancement, inclusion competencies, accessibility, respect and engagement, and inclusive language,” he said.

“The strategy also highlights work we have been doing to progress an inclusive culture, and shows how we plan to measure our success.”

He said that as Secretary, he was committed to building a Department with an inclusive, diverse and non-judgmental culture, where everyone felt supported and able to contribute to their fullest potential.

“This strategy goes beyond attracting diversity into our workforce and embracing the inclusive approach,” Mr Fredericks said.

“To help us truly embed a culture of inclusion and accessibility we need to ensure people at all levels are included. Ensuring that all staff feel like they belong means that we can all positively contribute to the workplace.”

He said while many people were aware of the value of diversity and inclusion, “there are still many opportunities for improvement in the Department to ensure we achieve the most inclusive culture possible”.
