The Department of Home Affairs has kicked off a new program to attract world-class soccer players to Australia by making it easier for them to come and play here, and become permanent residents should they wish.
Announcing the new rules the Minister for Immigration, David Coleman said they would help strengthen Australia’s international teams and make them better equipped to compete at the highest level.
“Professional footballers are now able to be sponsored to work in Australia for longer periods with their listing on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List for skilled overseas workers,” Mr Coleman said.
“The change will help attract elite players with those sponsored able to access permanent residency if they meet the applicable visa criteria.”
He said a minimum salary of $120,000 was being introduced as part of the changes to maintain integrity in the sponsoring of professional players.
“Australia has always been a competitive sporting nation, and these changes are a win for our local players, teams and fans,” the Minister said.
“Attracting top international talent to Australian football clubs brings those players’ skills and experiences from overseas and contributes to the knowledge and skills growth of Australian players,” he said.
“It means we can do even better on the international stage.”
Minister for Sport, Senator Bridget McKenzie said the changes would go a long way in maintaining Australia’s reputation for sporting success.
She said tennis coaches had also been added to the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List as a result of strong tennis participation numbers and the growing demand for coaches.
