The Department of Human Services (DHS) has declared that a new State Government women’s strategy launched on 10 August was key to driving women and girls to live, study and work in South Australia and become the next generation of leaders.

The DHS said the South Australian Women’s Leadership and Economic Security Strategy 2021-2024 outlined the Government’s strong commitment to work with agencies, businesses and community organisations to ensure women thrived now and into the future.

It said the four-year Strategy targeted three crucial areas: Employment and entrepreneurship; Leadership and recognition, and Financial wellbeing.

The DHS said short and longer-term actions included: Promoting and nurturing women’s participation and leadership in South Australia’s burgeoning high-tech sector through partnering; Promoting opportunities to increase women’s participation in apprenticeships, traineeships, construction and STEM areas; Increasing leadership opportunities and platforms for recognition for women leaders of all ages; Promoting and encouraging flexible workplaces; Working across Government to address the gender pay gap; and Promoting and encouraging paid domestic and family violence leave to ensure women experiencing violence stayed connected to employment.

Minister for Human Services, Michelle Lensink said the Strategy would drive further, much-needed change.

“We want South Australian women to be financially secure and economically empowered,” Ms Lensink said.

President of the National Council of Women SA and Chairperson of the Premier’s Council for Women, Fiona Dorman said the Strategy recognised there were more opportunities to close the gender pay gap by breaking barriers; recognised the impact of women in the workforce; supported women in their professions; and provided further opportunity for women to drive their future.
