Hospital commemorated in time capsule

A digital time capsule is being prepared to mark the demolition of Perth’s Princess Margaret Hospital and will contain photographs, memories and experiences from people had links with the hospital at any level.

The hospital closed in June 2018 following the opening of the Perth Children’s Hospital, 109 years after it first began caring for local children and families.

The former hospital site is being demolished and remediated as part of the Subi East Project, which will create an inner-city village between Subiaco and the Perth central business district.

In a statement, the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage said the time capsule project titled Penny for Your Thoughts, would allow members of the community to share their experiences in an online format.

“Named after the original fundraising campaign for a children’s hospital, started with three pennies donated by a little girl in the late 1890s, the time capsule will allow people to visit a dedicated website to embed their memory onto a virtual penny,” the Department said.

“The virtual pennies will be stored on an external hard drive and enclosed in a time capsule that will be buried in a planned reflection space in the former hospital neighbourhood of Subi East,” it said.

The Department said the digital format meant anyone with an emotional connection to the hospital, from anywhere in the world, would have the opportunity to contribute.

“The capsule will be opened in 109 years, reflecting the number of years the hospital provided an essential service for Western Australia’s children and families,” it said.

Information on the Penny for Your Thoughts time capsule, including how to submit reflections and images, can be accessed at this PS News link.
