Not a lot to laugh about after the recent Federal Election (is there ever?) but Craig L of the Victorian Department of Justice and Community Safety found amusement in, of all places, his State’s Senate ballot paper.
Faced with the challenge of separating 32 parties and groups vying for the six Senate seats, the ever resourceful Australian Electoral Office chose to divide them into groups named A to Z and AA to AE for the overflow.
For Craig, the allocation of one party’s letter qualified as “fortunate serendipity”.
“I just wanted to comment,” Craig wrote, “on the Pirate Party sitting in group ‘R’.”
Well shiver me timbers Craig, that’s well worth commenting on. A fabulous PS News book prize will be on its way very soon.
Aaahhhrrrr!!
Scaled up!
Full marks to the NSW Department of Primary Industries now for its crackdown on fisherpersons catching undersized fish and shellfish but not throwing them back.
In the past few weeks the Department has focussed its efforts against the harmful practice, seizing an amazing 5,379 illegally harvested fish from 1,350 offences that generated a “whopping” $102,500 in on-the-spot fines. Twenty-six other characters will find their fates in court.
A hearty ‘well done’ to all concerned at the Department, but particularly to the person, committee or consultant who came up with the name of the campaign.
How does ‘Operation Small Fry’ sound?
Sounds, brilliant, hence the Department’s well-earned ‘Well Done”.
Brought to book
To Rama Gaind’s latest weekly giveaway now in which lucky readers stood the chance to win a copy of the book tracing the history of Melbourne’s Blackburn family: The Blackburns: Private Lives, Public Ambition by Carolyn Rasmussen.
To claim the prize all that was needed was to satisfy Rama that we knew Doris Blackburn’s maiden name and then be among the first two entrants whose entries squeezed out of the PS News Barrel of Booty.
The answer was Hordern, which both Anthony D from the Victorian Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions, and Teresa K from the Family Court of Australia were able to confirm, winning them a copy of the book each.
Congratulations to Anthony and Teresa and a big thanks to everyone who took part. The books will be on their way to their new homes shortly.
For another chance to be among Rama’s winners, simply visit this week’s giveaway at this PS News link and answer her super-simple quiz question.
Good luck to all who do!
Truth in advertising?
Share and share alike
And finally, could it be PS-sssst!’s gnarly old journalistic crustiness or is it a reasonable suspicion to raise our eyebrows at the interesting activities of some world leaders with business backgrounds?
For example, was PS-sssst! alone in noticing the recent nosedive in share prices when one of the planet’s leaders sprung tariffs on another country’s imports and then within a few days played down the pressure of his actions, only to watch the share prices skyrocket back to their near normal level?
As one who sees the stock market as a zero-sum game (for every seller fearing their shares will fall there’s a buyer who believes they’ll go up) PS-sssst! wonders if business oriented leaders, their families and friends can resist the fabulous fortunes at their fingertips, simply by imposing tariffs (and diving in to buy shares at tumbling prices) then scrapping the tariffs (in time to return the cheap shares to the now soaring market) for a squillion or two in profit.
Of course PS-sssst! would never accuse any single world leader of such selfish, corrupt and anti-social activity would we?
All we can suggest is that we remember where we heard it first!
‘Til next week…….
