The Minister for the Environment has announced that rabbits and hares in the Mulligans Flat area are being rounded up and removed as part of the expansion of the Flat’s sanctuary.
The Minister, Mick Gentleman said work was progressing well and after rabbit and hare control, the next priority would be foxes and feral cats.
“To allow the control work to take place, closures will be in place each Thursday evening from 6pm until 6am through to 4 October,” Mr Gentleman said.
“Signage will be in place.”
He said the control program followed successful work done in the original sanctuary.
“That program was so successful that no rabbits or hares have been seen or reported in the sanctuary since September 2016,” Mr Gentleman said.
He said this was a remarkable achievement and the lessons learnt could now be utilised in the expanded sanctuary.
“Work began in mid-2017 on tripling the size of Mulligans Flat Sanctuary under a joint project with the Woodlands and Wetlands Trust, ACT Government and Commonwealth Government.
“The 485-hectare sanctuary is being expanded to the south with new predator proof fencing being constructed that will add 801 hectares, making up a total of 1,286 hectares of protected area.”
He said the larger sanctuary would provide greater protection for larger populations of reintroduced species.
The 12-kilometre extension of the predator-proof fence was expected to be completed by October.
