Adelaide Hills sisters, Georgia (vocal, guitar, keys), Ella (vocal, bass, electric cello), and Clara Germein (vocal, drums) have written, recorded and produced a single that many female musicians can easily identify with.
“Pretty good for girls” was the comment by the soundman after they completed their soundcheck when on a national tour.
I suppose he thought that they’d be pretty ordinary.
It’s a sexist stereotype that, surprisingly, is still prevalent in some sections of the music industry.
Clara commented that she “went into a music shop to buy some drumsticks and the guy behind the desk asked if I was buying them for my boyfriend.”
Ella said of the soundcheck experience “We wanted to write a song that would help tackle these stereotypes and give a voice to anyone who might be going through a similar experience.”
Good For A Girl is the outcome of that process and it’s not just good for a girl, it’s good, full stop!
The girls come from a musical family their dad played trumpet in a New Orleans R&B band and their mother led the singing around the piano in the family home, so it was a natural progression when they graduated from busking on the main street of their local town to playing local venues.
As with a lot of groups made up of siblings their voices form a natural harmony and Good For A Girl is well constructed with sparse guitars, quirky piano, a solid rhythmic underpinning and hooks galore.
It’s catchy and deserves radio time.
They recorded the song in their home studio when a planned tour of the UK and Europe was canned due to COVID.
Georgia comments that “there’s definitely something empowering about writing, recording, and producing your own music… especially doing it as a family.”
I hope that after restrictions have been lifted the girls can track down that sound engineer, sell him with a copy of their single, and thank him for the inspiration.
