The National Arboretum Canberra has increased its walking tracks and trails by more than 50 per cent.

The Arboretum has added an extra 12 km of tracks and trails to its 8km existing network.

“The new trails meander through approximately 60 forests and take in some of Canberra’s best views,” the Arboretum said.

“The new multi-use, multi-directional tracks and trails will better connect the Arboretum to surrounding areas such as the city and Mount Stromlo, supporting Canberrans to keep healthy and active by walking, running and cycling,” it said.

On its website the Arboretum said the multi-use trails had been designed to ensure access to as many forests and vistas as possible for families, walkers, joggers and low impact cyclists.

It said the new tracks and trails provided access to forests not accessible by public vehicles as well as connecting with existing trails including the Bicentennial National trail and ACT’s Centennial trail.

“Already a popular jogging, cycling and dog walking venue, a total of 20km of tracks and trails will increase recreational opportunities and variety of gradients at the National Arboretum Canberra.”

It said Ngunnawal representatives, the ACT Heritage unit, the equestrian and cycling communities were consulted during the development of the new Tracks and Trails plan.

It said that since opening its doors in 2013, the Arboretum had welcomed more than 3.9 million visitors and was a popular destination for visitors, recreational users and active commuters.
