The flow of traffic between the ACT and Queanbeyan will receive a boost with the Federal Government beginning work on a $12 million upgrade of the intersection of Lanyon Drive and Tompsitt Drive in Jerrabomberra.
Commonwealth Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Michael McCormack announced the upgrade, saying it is expected to ease congestion on a main commuter route between NSW and the ACT.
“This is an intersection which sees heavy congestion in the morning and afternoon peaks,” Mr McCormack said.
“The installation of traffic lights will ensure traffic moves freely, and the intersection will service future demand.”
NSW Minister for Regional NSW, John Barilaro said the project would improve travel times for those who commuted between NSW and the ACT.
“Once complete, it will help to keep traffic moving through the intersection and cater to the future growth in population in and around Queanbeyan,” Mr Barilaro said.
“Anyone who has travelled through this intersection will know how congested it can become during the morning and evening peak, so it’s great to see major work under way.”
NSW Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight, Melinda Pavey said the work involved replacing the existing roundabout with traffic lights.
“Installing traffic lights at this intersection will improve traffic flow for motorists who travel through it at peak times and provide better facilities for pedestrians and cyclists,” Mrs Pavey said.
