Free plant scheme grows again at Yarralumla

The Transport Canberra and City Service Directorate’s Free Plant Issue Scheme at the Yarralumla Nursery has returned open for business after five months on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minister for Transport and City Services, Chris Steel said the Scheme was one of Yarralumla Nursery’s most important contributions to the greening of newly developed suburbs in the ACT.

“For 90 years [the Nursery]) has helped Canberra residents who have bought new blocks of land to greenify their gardens with shrubs, screening plants and ground covers which are suitable to our local climate and soil conditions,” Mr Steel said.

“It is, and always has been, completely free for Canberrans to claim within two years of the settlement date on their new ACT residential block of land,” he said.

“All new landowners need to do is to make a booking with the Yarralumla Nursery by calling 6207 2447 between 9am to 3pm Monday to Friday and bring with them three forms of identification as advised by the Nursery staff or on the Transport Canberra and City Services website.”

Mr Steel said the team at the Nursery would then direct eligible landowners to their range of locally grown plants, which were available to the value of $220 per block.

“While it was disappointing that the scheme was put on temporary hold last year, it was important that we keep the community and our Nursery staff members safe from the risks of COVID‑19,” the Minister said.

“People who bought new land and were waiting for the scheme to return can now claim their allocation of plants and help to contribute to Canberra’s reputation as a garden city,” he said.
