Fisheries Authority to float boat ramp

The Victorian Fisheries Authority’s (VFA) Better Boating Victoria is calling for feedback on plans to improve on-water access to the Maribyrnong River by building the river’s first public recreational boat ramp.

Minister for Fishing and Boating, Melissa Horne said the boat ramp, proposed for Ascot Vale, was part of a plan to improve boating in Victoria and complimented VFA’s Maribyrnong River Native Fish Revival Project.

“Better Boating Victoria is progressing plans to construct a single-lane ramp at the end of Newsom Street in Ascot Vale,” Ms Horne said.

“Several options were investigated throughout the 18 months of preliminary planning works, with the Newsom Street site chosen given its proximity to a wide stretch of the river and location amid a recreational precinct away from residents,” she said.

Ms Horne said the Maribyrnong river currently catered for kayaks and smaller craft but had no dedicated boating facilities.

She said the ramp would provide recreational boaters with access to the popular fishing spot where they could catch bream, estuary perch and mullet.

She encouraged boaters, residents and community members to have their say on the plans before 4 May to inform the final design work and ensure the facility met community needs.

The Maribyrnong River boat ramp concept plans, including information on how to have a say, can be accessed at this PS News link.
