Firefighters have chop at BBQ safety

Firefighters are calling for people to check their barbecues ahead of the Melbourne Cup and Grand Final day.

Acting Chief Officer at the Country Fire Authority (CFA), Garry Cook said it was important for people to do a few safety checks before firing up their barbeques.

“Before you throw on the snags and chops for Grand Final day or the Melbourne Cup, we’re asking you to check the connections on your gas barbie,” Acting Chief Officer Cook said.

“Spending a few minutes to inspect the connection before you turn on the gas can keep you and your loved ones safe,” he said.

“And it means you won’t end up with a crew of firefighters crashing your barbecue.”

A/Chief Officer Cook said it was a quick exercise for people to check their gas cylinders.

“The check really is simple; just spray the hose and regulator connections with soapy water before firing up the barbecue,” he said.

“Bubbles will form if gas is escaping.”

He said that if people had any doubts about the connections, they should turn the gas off and replace the connection or contact a licensed gasfitter.
