With the AFL Grand Final just around the corner the Country Fire Authority (CFA) and Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) are calling on residents to check their barbecues before firing up.
Chief Officer of the CFA, Jason Heffernan said it was important for people to conduct a few safety checks before “tackling your sausages”.
Chief Officer Heffernan said people could check the connection on a gas barbecue by spraying the hose and regulator connections with soapy water before firing up their barbecue.
“Soap bubbles will appear if gas is escaping,” Chief Officer Heffernan said
“If this occurs, turn off the gas and correct or replace the connections,” he said.
Chief Officer Heffernan said people should contact a licensed gasfitter if they needed assistance or had any doubts about the connections.
Fire Rescue Commissioner for FRV, Ken Block said people should leak-test a gas cylinder every time they connected it.
“Spending a few minutes inspecting the connection before you turn on the gas will keep you and your loved ones safe,” Commissioner Block said.
“The only siren we want you to hear this weekend is the one from Optus Stadium in Perth,” he said.
Commissioner Block reminded Victorians that cooking, whether indoors or on a barbecue, should never be left unattended.
