The Senior Manager of Pollution Response at the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER), Ken Raine (pictured) has been honoured with the Environmental Health Association of WA’s Richard Lugg Award, only the fourth person to be done so.
Mr Raine received the honour for his outstanding service to environmental health, having spent 37 years advocating for stronger collaboration between State and Local Governments.
Director General of DWER, Mike Rowe said Mr Raine was a worthy winner, who had driven significant achievements and improvements in environmental protection in Western Australia.
“At DWER, Ken’s work in protecting the environment and human health from pollution incidents and emergencies has helped to establish WA as a leader in Australian pollution response,” Mr Rowe said.
“He led the development of the Department’s Pollution Response Unit, which he now manages, and works with Local Government and State Government Agencies in responding to serious pollution incidents and hazardous materials emergencies.”
He said Mr Raine also managed the Department’s Light Industry Program, which worked with Local Governments to reduce contaminants from light industrial premises and commercial activities, preventing them from entering rivers.
Mr Rowe commended Mr Raine on his dedication to building strong working relationships between State and Local Governments to enable more cohesive environmental protection initiatives.
“Ken has also been awarded both an Australia Day Achievement Medallion, and the AELERT Achievement in Regulatory Profession Award in 2018 for his commitment to environmental protection,” Mr Rowe said.
