Energex safety lessons go online

Energex and Ergon Energy are to deliver lessons about staying safe around electricity through webinar events tailored for primary schools in rural, remote and metropolitan areas.

Community Safety Manager at Energex, Aaron Smith said the idea, part of the utilities’ Safety Heroes program, was inspired by the unprecedented transition to online learning during COVID-19 restrictions in Term Two of the school year.

“Virtual presentations are a way to reach schoolchildren across Queensland,” Mr Smith said.

“No matter where you live it is important to understand how electricity works and how to stay safe around it.

“While we once again have a small army of volunteers who have put their hands up to deliver Safety Heroes presentations in person, as part of this year’s program schools will also have the option of registering for live webinars during Electricity Safety Week.”

He said Energex and Ergon were hoping to break another participation record in 2020, after 96 per cent of Queensland primary schools registered for the Safety Heroes program last year.

Safety Heroes is an opportunity to educate students on the wonders and dangers of electricity, which is an essential part of their lives,” Mr Smith said.

“Whether they spot a damaged power point at home or a fallen powerline in their neighbourhood, children need to know the next steps to stay safe, and the lead-up to storm season is always an ideal time to teach them about electrical safety.”

The Safety Heroes program runs during Electricity Safety Week from 7-to-11 September.
