Canberra’s employers have been invited to register the skills and talents they need in their workers to assist in developing the Territory’s vocational education and training (VET) policies.
Issued by the Minister for Vocational Education and Skills, Meegan Fitzharris as part of National Skills Week which runs until Sunday (2 September), the consultation will support the draft 2019 ACT Skills Needs List.
Ms Fitzharris said the list would help identify future skills needs and funding priorities for vocational education and training in the ACT.
She said she would use the Skills Needs List to better target the training available to new and prospective students in Canberra.
“The ACT Skills Needs List helps us to attract a productive and highly skilled workforce that contributes to the ACT’s economic future,” Ms Fitzharris said.
“It is used to help us identify which vocational education and training qualifications may receive Government subsidy through specified training initiatives, and the level of subsidy provided for a training place in those qualifications.”
She said that with more than 200 qualifications on the list, there were a lot of skills in the ACT that were in demand, including plumbers, welfare support workers, motor mechanics, hairdressers and gardeners.
“The list is reviewed each year in close consultation with local vocational education and training stakeholders, to ensure it remains aligned with changing skills needs in the ACT,” the Minister said.
“Feedback from industry, employers, training providers and members of the wider community is valued and is the key to the review.”
Consultation will continue until 14 September and employers interested in sharing their views can do so at this PS News link.
