The Queensland Department of Education has been awarded Gold status in the Pride in Diversity’s Australian Workplace Equality Index (AWEI), part of the recent Australian LGBTQ Inclusion Awards.

In a statement, the Department said this meant that as an employer it had gained a score in the top 10 per cent of the 157 Australian employers who submitted to the AWEI.

It was the only Education Department in Australia to achieve Gold status.

Other employers to achieve Gold employer status included Brisbane City Council, the CSIRO, the Federal Department of Agriculture, RMIT University, SBS and the University of NSW.

“The Department benchmarks its current practices and initiatives each year against international best practice through Pride in Diversity’s AWEI benchmarking program,” the statement said.

“As a result it has provided an environment where every employee can bring their true selves to work and feel included, leading to increased performance and wellbeing, crucial to its overall success.”

At the awards, held online this year because of the COVID-19 crisis, the RMIT University was named Employer of the Year for the second year in a row.

Dentons was announced as Small Employer of the Year and Advance Diversity Services, which provides support services to culturally and linguistically diverse communities, was named Service Provider of the Year.
