Education Week a learning experience

The Department of Education has announced that the theme for this year’s Education week will be ‘Learning together’, celebrating the achievements of staff and students in the face of adversity.

In a statement, the Secretary of the Department, Mark Scott said the Week would run from 3 August, with the theme reflecting the incredible months of 2020 so far where students continued to learn and achieve, despite natural disasters and a pandemic.

“It’s our annual week of celebration, held in NSW for more than 50 years to highlight the achievements of our students and staff and the role of public schools as the cornerstone of their communities,” Mr Scott said.

“We know the best learning takes place in a partnership of students, teachers, parents and the community – and this year has really reinforced that understanding for us all,” he said.

“This year will no doubt be different as schools plan Education Week events but I encourage you to think of creative ways you can connect with your school communities, perhaps in the virtual space.”

Mr Scott said schools had experienced significant disruptions but staff, in partnership with parents, had worked tirelessly to ensure high quality teaching and learning had continued for all students.

“As life slowly returns to normal, it’s time to reflect on our achievements and the resilience of our school communities,” he said.

He said Education Week would focus on four key messages: ‘schools are the cornerstone of communities’; ‘change and resilience’; ‘connect better and learn together’; and ‘share your stories’.
