The Department of Education is to create new leadership roles in public schools with a focus on delivering evidence-based best practice.

Minister for Education, Sarah Mitchell said hundreds of new literacy and numeracy experts would join NSW public schools, with every public primary school across the State to receive a dedicated Curriculum Assistant Principal.

Ms Mitchell said the more than 1,300 new positions would strengthen the focus on literacy and numeracy and support curriculum implementation with the new K-2 English and Mathematics syllabuses to roll out from 2022.

“Government is committed to the highest quality of education in our public schools and improving literacy and numeracy in the early years is key to this,” Ms Mitchell said.

“The initiative is a core part of the new School Success Model, which ensures evidence-based teaching and best practice are implemented across the system and support is targeted,” she said.

“We are building a world-class curriculum and these new positions will support teachers to deliver it in the best way possible.”

Ms Mitchell said the new positions would have an explicit focus on leading schools with evidence-based teaching and assessments to improve student outcomes.

The Minister said the leadership roles would support a strong instructional leadership model in all schools; coordinate professional learning for teachers; monitor student outcomes; and support families to be key partners in student learning.

She said the new program would begin from next year, with all positions expected to be in place ahead of full implementation of the new K-2 English and Mathematics Syllabuses in 2023.
