DPI taps into Northern crop trial

The Department of Primary industries (DPI) is to share the information it receives about crops in the State’s north with farmers in the area to help them with timely decision-making on the farm.

DPI’s Northern NSW Research Results will now be published in an e-newsletter every three to four months.

Project Officer at DPI, Penny Heuston said the new online platform allowed the results to reach a wider audience more frequently.

“The aim of the e-newsletter is to keep farmers regularly updated on the current research being done in the northern region,” Ms Heuston said.

“This will allow us to deliver trial results in a more timely manner, not just once a year when the hard-copy book comes out,” she said.

“The results will not just be from the latest trials, but also those relevant to the time of year, such as disease management results in winter and nutritional information prior to sowing.”

Ms Heuston said that at the end of the year all papers would be printed and distributed in “the normal way” and that the newsletter would complement the annual printed edition.

She said farmers were encouraged to subscribe to the newsletter, so that they are emailed each issue directly to their inbox.

“The first issue is available now and includes results on 11 different crop trials, including rust management in faba beans and the yield response of canola and wheat to nitrogen application,” Ms Heuston said.

“We strongly encourage feedback to help us know if the information is relevant to you and what else we could include to help build knowledge and steer practice change on your farm,” she said.

The first edition of the Northern NSW Research Results e-newsletter as well as information on how to subscribe can be accessed on the Departments website at this PS News link.
