Public servants at the Department of Planning and Environment (DPE) and the Natural Resources Access Regulator have hit the road this month to meet with water users in southern inland NSW.

Executive Director of Policy and Strategy at DPE, Kaia Hodge said the metering experts would provide information about the non-urban water metering rules that are to be rolled out across the State in the next 21 months.

Ms Hodge said there would be five water metering roadshows throughout April and May to give water users the chance to meet with industry experts and learn about their obligations.

“We’re delivering a robust water metering framework to better manage the use of water in NSW for current and future generations,” Ms Hodge said.

“The roadshows are an opportunity for water users to pick the brains of our industry experts to help them understand what the new non-urban metering rules mean for them and to ensure they have the information they need to comply with the framework.”

She said DPE knew the introduction of new requirements came with challenges, “so we’re doing everything we can to step up our support for water users as the 1 December compliance date approaches.”

“Water is a precious resource and if we can’t measure it, we can’t ensure that it is managed fairly and efficiently,” Ms Hodge said.

“Whether you use a little or a lot of water, every drop counts and needs to be measured accurately.”

She said the roadshows would include a Q&A session as well as presentations from DPE, the Natural Resources Access Regulator and WaterNSW.

She said there would also be an opportunity for water users to connect with metering suppliers and installers.

The roadshows are scheduled from 10am to 1pm on 28 April at Griffith Exies Club and on 17 May at Broken Hill Civic Centre, and from 9am to 12pm on 18 May at Dareton, Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club.
