ACT Health has advised consumers in the ACT to take care in case they become caught up in the national strawberry contamination outbreak.
Acting ACT Chief Health Officer, Dr Andrew Pengilley advised shoppers who had purchased punnets of strawberries from brands such as Donnybrook Berries, Delightful Strawberries, Oasis, Love Berry, Berry Licious and Berry Obsession to throw them away after needles had been found in their products in other jurisdictions
Dr Pengilley said the same advice applied to anyone who was unsure of the brand of their strawberries.
“If in doubt, throw them out,” Dr Pengilley said.
“People who have purchased fresh strawberries and then frozen them without the packaging for later use should be particularly cautious,” he said.
The Chief Health Officer said that while ACT Health believed unaffected brands were safe and could continue to be eaten, “consumers should cut them up before eating”.
He said anyone discovering contaminated fruit should contact the Health Protection Service on 0408 623 407.
