Sex offender and Member for Kiama Gareth Ward has spoken officially for the first time since his conviction, indicating he’s planning to appeal the verdict.

A jury this week found Ward guilty of three counts of indecent assault and one count of sexual intercourse without consent in relation to two separate incidents.

These were the sexual assault of an 18-year-old man at his Meroo Meadow home in 2013 and the digital rape of a 24-year-old man at his Potts Point home in 2015 following a function at Parliament House.

Ward was taken into custody on Wednesday (30 July) after Judge Kara Shead revoked his bail, but he remains the Member for Kiama.

In a statement released by his electorate office late this afternoon (1 August), Ward said he was taking advice about his next steps.

“I am absolutely shattered with the result of the trial and have taken the opportunity over the last few days to spend time with those I love following the verdict,” Ward’s statement read.

“I am taking advice about next steps, but I can confirm that I have provided instructions to my legal team to prepare an appeal at the earliest opportunity.

“I take this opportunity to thank so many from across our community that have sent warm and caring messages of support to me and my family.”

Earlier this week, NSW Premier Chris Minns said the government had obtained legal advice that the Lower House had the power to remove Ward from parliament, even with an appeal pending.

He said the parliament would move to expel Ward when it sits next week.
