The Department of Environment and Science (DES) has used the recent crocodile attack on a man on Lizard Island to warn the community to be Crocwise at all times in Croc country.
The Department said the man was bitten on the head and neck by a crocodile while snorkelling in Anchor Bay.
He was treated at the scene before being flown to Cairns Hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
In a statement, the DES said a team of officers had flown to Lizard Island to attempt to locate and remove the crocodile.
“The Manager of the Lizard Island Resort offered the use of two of the resort’s vessels to assist with those efforts,” the Department said.
“All crocodiles that pose a threat to human safety are targeted for removal under the Queensland Crocodile Management Plan.”
It said it wanted to remind people that Lizard Island was known croc country and urged people in the area to always be Crocwise.
“Expect crocodiles in all far northern Queensland waterways even if there is no warning sign; be aware crocs also swim in the ocean and be extra cautious around water at night,” the Department said.
“Stand back from the water’s edge when fishing and don’t wade in to retrieve a lure; always camp at least 50 metres from the edge of the water and never leave food, fish scraps or bait near water, camp site or boat ramp.”
The DES stressed that children should always be supervised near the water and pets should be kept on a lead.
