Deakin University has been awarded the Australian War College contract to provide academic and support services for the Australian Defence Force (ADF), the Australian Public Service (APS) and international military students.

Major General and Commander of the Australian Defence College, Mick Ryan said Deakin was selected as the preferred tender for the Australian War College Academic Agreement and would commence as the provider in January 2023.

MAJGEN Ryan said the College, located in Weston Creek, ACT, contributed key leadership and professional development training through two flagship courses: The Australian Command and Staff Course and Defence Strategic Studies Course.

“Deakin University will help deliver training and education to the future workforce of the ADF and APS,” MAJGEN Ryan said.

“The contract ensures the continuation of world-leading joint professional military education to our people and invited international partners, to prepare them for the future challenges their careers will bring,” he said.

MAJGEN Ryan said the contract with Deakin University would support the Department of Defence’s 2020 Force Structure Plan as well as jobs across the academic sector within Australia.

In a statement, the Australian Defence College said the Australian Command and Staff Course was a 46-week residential course for mid-career military officers and selected Australian Public Servants that prepared officers and officials for command and staff appointments in integrated, joint and single-Service environments at the O5 and O6 level.

The College said the Defence and Strategic Studies Course, also a 46-week residential course, was for senior military officers and selected Australian Public Servants to prepare them for senior appointments in the national security environment.
